Hydro-excavation is a new method of excavating that is growing fast around
the USA and Canada. The hydrovac truck has many applications in the utility and
excavating world. With utility work, we often must dig in close proximity to locates
painted on the ground. Even if there isn’t paint on the ground, sometimes we just
know there’s something down there based on context clues in the area. In the
past that is when we get the shovels out and spend the better part of the day
hand-digging. Just because we’re hand-digging doesn’t mean the employees are
safe or the utility line won’t get damaged. Another technique is to start digging
with the heavy equipment and hope for the best. I have been a part of both
scenarios as a journeyman lineman.
